Sherman Vc Firefly

3 Troop, A Squadron, Northamptonshire Yeomanry, British Army, Normandy, France, 1944

Now, this is something extraordinary for me! Not only it is not an airplane model, it is also in 1/72 scale, not my favourite scale at all!

The explanation is rather simple: I was in the process of ordering a large scale model, directly from airfix.com. In order to qualify for free shipping, I needed to add something cheap – around 10 euros – to my shopping basket. At the same period, there was an active group build campaign for Sherman models in my favourite Facebook group. Put those two together and you get this model!

As far as building models go, it was a very simple build. The kit has few parts and almost all need to painted with the same colour (olive drab). I did paint the wheels and tracks separately (black for the rubber and gun metal for the tracks). After that, I used some clay washes to make it look used like the real thing.

After I finished it, I put it in my display case but it looked too small next to the 1/48 scale planes. So, I decided to build a small diorama to put it on. I used a small photo frame and some foam paper, covered with green grass. A small wooden fence was built and added to make it look a bit more interesting, along with a “broken” road sign from Normandy (I found it online and printed it myself).
