Hawker Tempest Mk.V

123rd Wing, RAF, Wunstorf, Germany, 1946/47.

After finishing the F4U Corsair, I decided that the 1/72 scale was not for me. From now on I will focus on 1/48 scale aircraft.

I wanted a nice 1/48 WWII plane and the Tempest was always one of my favorites. I looked for available kits and the one from Eduard looked promising. I chose the “ProfiPACK edition”, as it contains some nice extras: Photoeched parts for the cockpit, painting masks for the canopy and wheels and a nice set of decals. At first I was pondering on buying some more extras (cockpit, engine, gun bays) but they would probably be wasted as I don’t consider my skills good enough for this kind of modding (yet).

My choice proved correct. It is truly an excellent kit with amazing details. The fit was mostly great (except for edge of the wind in the flaps area).

I’m not a big fan of the classic RAF grey/green camouflage. Also, this was the first time I used an airbrush, so I wanted something simpler. Thus, I chose the silver color scheme of NV708, flown by W/Cdr. John Chester Button DSO, DFC, CO of No. 123 Wing, RAF Station Wunstorf, Germany, 1946/47.

I prefer acrylic colors as they are spouce-friendly(TM) (no smell, easy to clean), so I used Aluminum MMM-03 from Mission Models for the outer surfaces, along with a number of Humbrol acrylic colors for the cockpit and minor details.

After painting and applying the decals, I did some basic dry-brushing. for weathering. I think I overdid it, as can be seen from the photos.
